A note from our artistic director...

Welcome and thank you for visiting the Taking Flight Theatre Company blog...

Our recent production of The Fox on the Fairway marked our final production at the NOVA Loudoun campus. We have enjoyed a 9+ year relationship with this location, but a combination of current budget constraints and Taking Flight Theatre Company’s rapid growth no longer enable the campus to share this space with us, as they have so generously done in the past. While we are saddened to leave our adopted home, we look forward to our next chapter.

In order to focus on the search for new rehearsal and performance spaces, we will suspend our public operations for the remainder of the 2013 season. We look forward to presenting The Great American Trailer Park Musical, Eurydice, and many future seasons of entertainment to you in our newhome.

As our audience, our community, and the very reason we exist, we ask your help in our search for a new venue. Our optimum space would have a production booth with light and sound, wing space, a backstage, access to a scene shop to build sets, the ability to access on weekends and evenings, and comfortable seating for our patrons. Please contact us by using the Get Involved tab with your thoughts. We are a not-for-profit501(c)3 organization. We also welcome you to follow our blog, as we'll be using it to update you all on our progress.

On a personal note, I have enjoyed performing, directing and working behind-the-scenes and in the boardroom (usually the nearest restaurant) for you, from the very first show presented on this stage until today. Our productions have been recognized for their artistic merit and entertainment value, and I am proud of the reputation we have established. I have made lifelong friends and learned untold lessons within these walls. Community theatre is just that, and the Loudoun County community is one we have been proud to be a part of.

Again, thank you for your support, and we look forward to welcoming you – our old friends – to our new home.

Equus Cast Take a Field Trip

The cast of Equus, recently took a trip to a real working farm! They were able to get to know each other a little better, delve into some deep character development, and get up close and personal with some very beautiful horses. A great time was had by all. Check out some of the photos below!

Equus Cast Hard at Work!

It's been a while since we posted anything, but we thought now would be a great time to let all our trusted readers know that the cast of our upcoming fall show Equus, are hard at work to ensure we bring you our most cutting-edge show yet!

Plot:
Equus is a Tony Award winning psychological thriller inspired by a true story. It tells the story of psychiatrist Dr. Dysart and his young patient, Alan Strang. Alan's dangerous obsession with horses leads him to commit an unthinkable crime, which leaves Dr. Dysart trying to unravel the reason why – leading to his own crisis of self-doubt. The show is filled with confrontation and mystery as it explores the relationships between devotion, myth and sexuality.

Don't take it from us, take it from our patrons!

Of course it's easy for those of us at Taking Flight to be proud of our shows. But its when our patrons let us know what they thought that we're really proud. As a theater company, cast, and creative team, our primary goal with every show we put up is to captivate our audience. Next to Normal does just that from the first note sang to the final bow. Take a look at what some of our patrons are saying so far...

• I saw this show twice in New York with the original Broadway cast. Alice Ripley originated Diana and, over the course of a tour, completely devastated her voice. The acting and vocal chops required to portray Diana are intense, and I was thrilled to see that leading lady Holly McDade was more than up to the task. Apparently she's a new face in the DC community theater scene and I'll be sure to see whatever she's in! Second, the role of Gabe requires a true tenor with an impressive range, and the guy in this cast nailed it. "I'm Alive" and "There's a World" gave me goosebumps. Third, the chemistry between Henry (Michael Bigley, a DC community theater veteran) and Natalie (Claire O’Brien) was perfect. O'Brien's voice and characterization combined with Bigley's solid comedic timing made their scenes very enjoyable.
  
  
• There are THREE other DC-area community theater shows mounting productions of NEXT TO NORMAL over the next year or so, and they'll have to work hard to rival this impressive production. Kudos to the cast and crew. I'll be returning to see the show again before it closes!
  
  
• Outstanding performance....extremely powerful show...actors were all very strong with great voices...not an uplifting story but moving
  
  
• I'm still pinching myself. I really didn't think that the Taking Flight company could pull off this complicated musical. I saw it at the Kennedy Center last year, and I actually think I enjoyed this production more. The singing was excellent and the acting was pretty darn good too. Standout performances were Holly McDade and Keith Miller, but I thought that Claire O'Brien was outstanding. great singer and great actor. I really think she has a future as an accomplished actress. Really enjoyable evening. Well done!
  
  
• This was an amazingly powerful production...I saw the debut of the play at Signature Theater way back when, and this cast at TFT was in every way their equal. The music and lyrics are poetic and moving. I told my friends at the NAMI No Va chapter to get the word out about it, and also will tell everyone at the Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance to check it out. Bravo!
  
  
• Emotionally disconcerting! How many families have turmoil at home hidden from others? This show can really shake-up one's recollections and grab you around the heart. This is a brilliant entertaining show that I recommend to everyone.
  
  
• I had seen this at the Kennedy Center last year so I knew the story line (which is VERY powerful and very emotional!) They did a wonderful job--both in acting and singing (some really GREAT voices!) I cried the first time I saw it and I cried this time too! If you can--go see this GREAT production--there are two more weekends--BUT make sure you take tissues!

Sneak Peek! TFT paints the floor...

The Behind the Scenes staff snuck into the theatre this weekend to catch a sneak peek of Earth and Sky. Albeit painstaking, painting the stage turned out to be well worth it as the vision of director Matthew Randall and set designer Kevin King came to life. Just looking at it makes us think of an old black and white mystery movie.

We didn't get a chance to see the cast in rehearsal action, but from the inside jokes to the friendly banter, you'd think this group were family. We can't wait to see them bring this great story to life!

Plot:
Earth and Sky is best described as an onstage Film Noir. When poet/librarian Sara McKeon learns that her boyfriend of ten weeks has been viciously murdered, she has no idea things can get even worse. Evidence suggests that David was possibly involved in kidnapping, rape and murder. Unable to reconcile these accusations with her memories, and fuming that the police don’t seem engaged, Sara begins her own investigation deep into Chicago’s urban underworld. 100 minutes with no intermission, the story moves backward and forward in time in overlapping scenes, from Sara and David's first meeting to the climatic denouement, as she finds herself facing her lover's killer.

Character Descriptions:

NOTE: Character age ranges and ethnicities are extremely flexible in this piece. Sara and David should be close enough in age to be a believable couple, but they can be early 20s to 30s, and David should be believable as a restaurant owner/manager. The detectives should be old enough that they would be working homicide cases. Characterization is more important than age range.

Sara McKean, poet and librarian. Pleasant and mild, perhaps even naive, though circumstances will reveal an inner strengh and fearlessness she may not even have realized she had.

David Ames, restaurant owner/manager, attractive, charming, hard-working. Sara's boyfriend of just 10 weeks, though theirs is a serious relationship.

Detective Al Kersnowski, a gentle soul in a rough profession. He's been around and seen too much. Aware of Weber's faults, protective of Sara.

Detective H.E. Weber, classic hard-bitten detective. Cheats on his wife, hits on Sara, has a bad disposition and a mean temper.

Joyce Lazlo, Sara's co-worker and confidente.

Billy Hart, bartender, owner of the bar where David was last seen alive. Billy's cook is a suspect. World-weary, businesslike, but with a soft spot for Sara.

Carl Eisenstadt, with the demeanor and appearance of a CEO. More than likely an organized crime boss. A bad man in a good suit.

Marie Defaria, David's ex-girlfriend. Hard, unsophisticated, wary.

Julius Gatz, a goon. Tough, stereotypical mobster.

Meet the Cast: Loose Knit!

First of all...it has been some time since we've updated our blog, so our deepest apologies to our faithful readers.

Second of all...what better way to revamp Behind the Scenes then with a meet-and-greet with the cast of our next production Loose Knit by Theresa Rebeck? Loose Knit is a hilarious comedy that follows five women who on a weekly basis, nestled in the heart of New York City, find comfort in a knitting circle. As the sweaters pile up, their lives unravel. Liz is having an affair with her sister’s husband, Gina’s lost her job, Paula is having an identity crisis, and Margie just wants a date.Enter: Miles, a swaggering businessman who made his first million before he turned 30, and only needs a wife to complete his life. And he knows exactly what he’s looking for. On a series of hilarious blind dates in a sushi restaurant, Miles and the women go head to head in an attempt to define what it is men and women want these days.

Meet the Director:

HALEY MURPHY is delighted to be returning to Taking Flight Theatre after directing Sabbath Night in the Church of the Piranha and the WATCH nominated Six Degrees of Separation. She has worked regionally in theatres from New York to North Carolina, most recently developing a summer drama camp in western Maine. Locally she has directed for companies such as Source Theatre (DC), the Arlington Players, the Reston Community Players, Encore Theatre, and Mount Vernon Community Children’s Theatre among others. She has taught theatre in a wide variety of theatres, schools and camps and is currently the founder and director of Dodgeball Theatre where her locally renowned Teen Ensemble develops and performs original work. She was a WATCH award winner for best Director of a Musical for her RCP production of Seussical.

Meet the Cast:
JACKIE DAVIS (Lily) majored in theatre arts at the University of Pennsylvania and began working in community theatre this past year. She was last seen as Rapunzel in Taking Flight Penguins’ production of Humpty Dumpty is Missing. Previous acting credits include Ralph/Wikewitch/Joe Bob in Anton in Show Business, Frau Gabor in Spring Awakening, Muriel Tate in Plaza Suite, and Antonio in The Tempest. She would like to thank her family and friends for their support.

CAITY BROWN (Gina) This is Caity's debut with Taking Flight and with community theatre in Virginia. Since moving to D.C. two years ago, she has appeared in several shows in Maryland and D.C., including Doubt, Young Turg (both at the Greenbelt Arts Center), I Remember Mama (Rockville Little Theatre), Who Dunit? (Bowie Community Theatre) and King Lear (Capital Fringe Festival). Originally from the Philadelphia area, she has also lived and studied in Connecticut and New York, where her community theatre credits also include Six Degrees of Separation, The Diary of Anne Frank, Getting Away with Murder, Psycho Beach Party, and Don't Drink the Water. She holds a degree in drama from Vassar College, but is now pursuing a Ph.D. in political science at Georgetown University. She would like to thank the director, cast, and crew for a great experience, in which the only trying part was learning how to knit.

JENNY GIRARDI (Liz) Jenny is effing thrilled to be in a production once again after being on a theatrical hiatus for several years. After earning her BA in Theatre at George Mason University, she moved to NYC in pursuit of the arts where she studied at the Maggie Flanigan Studio and was accepted into Atlantic Acting School. Jenny worked on several TV shows while in New York including consistent work as a Photo Double on CBS' The Good Wife before moving to Italy to run workshops for artists. She could not have asked for a better Director and cast to get knitty and gritty with!

KATE KEIFER (Marge) This is Kate's second production with Taking Flight, after last appearing in Frankenstein: A New Musical. After appearing in a long string of musicals, Kate is excited for the opportunity to perform in a play. With lines. Previously, Kate appeared with RCP in Curtains as Jessica Cranshaw for which she received a WATCH nomination, as well as Honk! (Dot/Henrietta),Mame (Gloria Upson), and City of Angels (Angel City 4). She has also appeared as Our Lady of the Spa in Nine (KAT), and Katherine Housman in The Invention of Love (ESP). Kate would like to thank Haley for talking her out of using a knitting stunt double, Mark Zuckerberg for giving her something to do when she's not at rehearsal, Steve, who always says yes against his better judgment, and Jack and Jane, for teaching her about comic timing.

ANISSA PAREKH (Paula) Anissa is thrilled to working with such a wonderful cast in crew in her first production with the Taking Flight Theatre Company. Anissa is a graduate of the Theatre Lab Honors Conservatory, and currently studies at the Studio Theatre Acting Conservatory. When she is not acting, Anissa practices law and yoga, and loves to knit. Anissa would like to thank her family and friends for their love and support, and especially her Mum for teaching her how to knit

STU FISCHER (Miles) has appeared in many productions, most recently as the male lead in "Spirit Tales" at this summer's Fringe Festival and as Marullus and Metellus in "Julius Caesar" for the Capital City Players. This summer he also performed the lead role in a stage reading of "The Wolf in Peter" at the National Theater sponsored by Theater J and Theater Lab. In real life, Stuart hates sushi and met his wife through eHarmony.

WAYNE JACQUES (Bob) Wayne is excited to be working with Taking Flight Theatre Company again. He has Had such a wonderful time working with such a talented cast and crew. Wayne has been with TFT since 2004, some of the shows he as been in include The Elephant Man, Six Degrees of Seperation, One Flew Over the Cookoo"s Nest and Fifth of July. Wayne would like to thank all of his family and friends for their love and support and thanks to his amaizing girlfriend Colleen which he loves so very much!

Meet the Characters of Humpty Dumpty is Missing!

These fairy tale characters have been awfully hard to get a hold of! Which could only mean that the case of the missing egg must really be getting intense. I'll try to get a hold of the others, but in the meantime, learn about some of our characters here!

Bo Beep - After long days of tending my sheep I like to relax with the other shepherdesses at the nightly village sing along. Some of my favorite song are I Wanna Hold Your Hand, The Sound Of Music, and Sheep Go To Heaven.

Cottontail - I'm the smart one in the family, and possibly, the favorite because I eat all my veggies. My sisters and I watch each other's back, and yes, we also watch our brother's back, too--not always though!

Mother Hubbard - I take the greatest pleasure working with Mother Goose around town; helping the rabbit sisters,

reading stories to people, or just cleaning up any little messes we happen to find.

Princess Rapunzel - Princess Rapunzel has a lot of time on her hands and spends most of it brushing and brushing and brushing her long golden hair. When she’s not immersed in hair care, she writes, directs, and plays all of the characters in her own YouTube videos, but even this is getting old. Basically, she keeps wondering when her life will begin and hopes someone can rescue her from her jail cell…er…tower.

Our summer children's show, Humpty Dumpty is Missing, opens tomorrow! I'm sure you've always wondering, what really did happen when Humpty fell off that wall. Well, I have anyway. And our cast (below) is doing everything they can to solve the case!

In Humpty Dumpty is Missing, Sammy Scoop, the private-eye with the help of his sidekick Alice from Dallas, come up with the list of suspects: Mistress Mary, Rip Van Winkle, Henny Penny, Peter Rabbit and his sisters, Rapunzel and the Handsome Prince, just to name a few. A last minute visit from Mother Goose and Mother Hubbard help Sammy and Alice catch the criminal. Discover the truth this summer with Taking Flight Theatre Company.

About the show:

What ever did happen when Humpty Dumpty fell off that wall?

Our summer children's show cast is busy rehearsing so they can (hopefully) solve this age-old mystery!

Humpty Dumpty is Missing! Is an affectionate spoof of the private eye thrillers of the 1940s and 50s. This fun-filled play is an excellent way to introduce young audiences and performers to the classic genre. Sammy Scoop, the private-eye with the help of his sidekick Alice from Dallas, come up with the list of suspects: Mistress Mary, Rip Van Winkle, Henny Penny, Peter Rabbit and his sisters, Rapunzel and the Handsome Prince, just to name a few. A last minute visit from Mother Goose and Mother Hubbard help Sammy and Alice catch the criminal. In this children’s mystery show, a detective, with the help of many fairy tale characters tries to find out what really happened when Humpty Dumpty fell off that wall.
